Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) 2024: In May 2016, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MOPNG) introduced the ‘Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana’ (PMUY) as a flagship initiative with the aim of providing access to clean cooking fuel, such as LPG, to rural and underprivileged households. These households were previously reliant on traditional cooking fuels like firewood, coal, and cow-dung cakes, which not only had adverse effects on the health of rural women but also contributed to environmental degradation.

Phases of Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) 2024
Ujjwala 1.0:
- The scheme was officially launched on May 1, 2016, in Ballia, Uttar Pradesh, by the Honorable Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi. The primary goal was to distribute 8 crore LPG connections to deprived households by March 2020. On September 7, 2019, the 8th crore LPG connection was handed over by the Prime Minister in Aurangabad, Maharashtra.
Ujjwala 2.0:
- Building upon the success of PMUY, Ujjwala 2.0 was introduced, involving an additional allocation of 1.6 crore LPG connections under the scheme, with a special provision for migrant households. The target for Ujjwala 2.0 was achieved in December 2022, bringing the total number of connections under the scheme to 9.6 crores.
- The Government of India has recently approved the release of an additional 75 lakh connections under the PMUY Scheme, bringing the overall target to 10.35 crores. The distribution of these connections is currently underway.

Features of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) 2024
- The program offers financial assistance of Rs 1600 for each LPG connection to Below Poverty Line (BPL) households. In addition to a deposit-free LPG connection, Ujjwala 2.0 will furnish beneficiaries with the initial refill and a complimentary hotplate.
Benefits of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) 2024
Cash assistance for Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) connections is provided by the Government of India, amounting to Rs. 1600 for a 14.2kg cylinder and Rs. 1150 for a 5kg cylinder. The cash assistance encompasses:
- Security Deposit for Cylinder – Rs. 1250 for 14.2 kg cylinder/ Rs. 800 for 5 kg cylinder
- Pressure Regulator – Rs. 150
- LPG Hose – Rs. 100
- Domestic Gas Consumer Card – Rs. 25
- Inspection/ Installation/ Demonstration charges – Rs. 75
Additionally, all PMUY beneficiaries will receive the first LPG refill and stove (hotplate) free of charge, in addition to their deposit-free connection, courtesy of the Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs).

Eligibility Criteria
Eligible candidates for the program include adult women from the following categories:
- SC Households
- ST Households
- Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Gramin)
- Most Backward Classes
- Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY)
- Tea and Ex-Tea Garden tribes
- Forest Dwellers
- People residing in Islands and River Islands
- SECC Households (AHL TIN)
- Poor Household as per 14-point declaration
- Applicants must be 18 years of age or older, and there should not be any existing LPG connections within the same household.

- The Aadhaar Card of the applicant as Proof of Identity and Proof of Address in case the applicant is residing at the same address as mentioned in the Aadhaar (not mandatory for Assam and Meghalaya).
- Ration Card issued by the State from which application is being made/ other State Govt. document certifying family composition/ Self-Declaration as per Annexure I (for migrant applicants)
- Aadhaar of the beneficiary and adult family members appearing in the document at Sl. 3.
- Bank Account Number and IFSC
- Supplementary KYC to support the status of the family.
